Early Life
Robert Hall Weir was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and, as a teenager, met Jerry Garcia in the early 1960s, a meeting that led to the formation of the Grateful Dead.
Career
Weir was a founding member of the Grateful Dead in 1965, serving as rhythm guitarist and singing songs he co-wrote such as “Sugar Magnolia”, “Truckin'” and “Playing in the Band”. After Garcia's death in 1995 ended the band, Weir led projects including RatDog and Furthur, and from 2015 toured with Dead & Company.
Legacy
The Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Weir died on January 10, 2026, at age 78.
