Early Life
Springsteen grew up in Freehold, New Jersey, and began playing in local bands as a teenager, building his craft in clubs along the Jersey Shore.
Career
After signing with Columbia Records in 1972, he broke through with Born to Run (1975). With the E Street Band he released Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978), The River (1980) and Born in the U.S.A. (1984), which produced seven top-10 singles. He also recorded the stripped-down album Nebraska (1982) and won an Academy Award for “Streets of Philadelphia” (1993).
Legacy
Springsteen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. He published the memoir Born to Run in 2016 and staged the acclaimed one-man show Springsteen on Broadway in 2017–2018.
