Early Life
Williams grew up in Compton, California, and trained with her sister Venus under the coaching of their father, Richard Williams.
Career
She turned professional in 1995 and won her first major at the 1999 U.S. Open. She held the world No. 1 ranking for 319 weeks and won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, four Olympic gold medals (including singles at London 2012) and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles with Venus.
Legacy
Williams announced her retirement in August 2022 and played her final match at the U.S. Open that September. She founded the venture firm Serena Ventures in 2014.
